Oh my lordy lordy. There has never - literally never - been a gadget I have so immediately and intensely coveted.
a) It's frickin' gorgeous
b) It integrates all Mac functionality - contacts, calendar, IM, iPhoto, iTunes, Safari - onto one pocketable device
c) Did I mention it's frackin' GORGEOUS?
d) 2MP integrated digital camera. Not a replacement for a real camera, but useable.
Comes out in June. One month after my Verizon account expires, and I have to switch us to Cingular to get me one. I wonder how I'm going to bridge that one-month gap.
GIMME GIMME.
Whoof.
Posted by rjt at January 9, 2007 03:53 PMLooks great. But, given Mac's lousy track record with providing enough supply for their demand, what are the odds you can snag one by June? Mightn't August or September be more likely?
Posted by: KG at January 10, 2007 12:56 PMGrrr. Too true.
At least we have a friend who is already on Cingular, who can come over and let me try the reception at our house. T-Mobile, another GSM network, never had any reception in our living room. No good.
Posted by: rjt at January 10, 2007 12:57 PMJoin Cingular when your Verizon contract runs out and get one of them crappy "free phones" for the month until you can get the fancy phone.
I can get a new Verizon phone in two months or so. Will I finally get one that lets me download and play my own ringers? I've dreamed of using They Might Be Giants' "Shoehorn With Teeth" for years. Perhaps it will finally come true.
Posted by: Twin C at January 10, 2007 01:27 PMBetween the iPhone and the new BMW M5 station wagon, I believe the "Weekly Want Its" are pretty well stocked for the foreseeable future.
I love the new iPhone. As you say, it hits all the geek pleasure centers at once.
And the M5 wagon...it's a station wagon with a V10 that can hit 200mph...need i say more?
Posted by: Scotso the Lawbot at January 10, 2007 02:17 PMOh, you had to go right for the M5 wagon, didn't you. Because yes, what my Dadmobile needs is 500 horsepower. Yes, yes it does. Yes.
Twin C: there's a service called Myxertones that can send you any audio file as your ring tone. Go to the website (I think that's the right spelling), select your phone model and carrier, then pick an mp3 from your computer. Easy peasy. And, perversely, free. I'm not sure why.
I think the plan to snag an iPhone is to refuse to renew a yearly contract with Verizon and go month-to-month, keeping my old (beaten, dying) phone until the iPhoney goodness is ready to roll...
Heh heh... geek pleasure centers...
Posted by: rjt at January 10, 2007 02:28 PMHow good is that gorgeous screen going to be once its been slathered in your face grease for a week? ISplotch. As a Cingular customer I am recently heartened by the increase in singal strength and service area coverage in the recent months. Your living room will probably be a good zone now. I like that thing is stylus free for all its functions.
Apparently they've "worked with the glass" to make the screen more smudge-resistant and scratch-resistant than you'd expect. Still. iSmear, no doubt.
It will receive a dedicated pants pocket, I suspect - all keys/change/etc. in the other.
Covet covet covet...
Posted by: rjt at January 11, 2007 10:36 AMEven your Luddite (as you often say) Mama-San wants the damn thing!
Posted by: mama-san at January 11, 2007 04:50 PMme, i'm a goin' with the soon to arrive 40gig gigabeat (under $200), payphones & a russian mechanical pocketwatch... don't get me wrong, i'm just as techlusty as the next dude, but slightly more idiosyncratically so...
hope stuff is good these days, cincyamigo.
Posted by: frylamb at January 19, 2007 02:51 PMMyxertones is the BEST. THING. EVER.
(I don't care if that's cliche. Sometimes it's true.)
