Toddler Translation.

filed under: Dadditudes

So Max now has several words under his control: cat, mama, cat, dada, cat, keys, cat, tree, cat, train, cat, eight, cat, and the letter e.

Oh, and cat.

But now he's got a new word that for the life of us, we can't figure out. For the last couple days he's been saying, with great confidence, "gook!"

By the way, for the easily offended, this rhymes with "book," and does not sound like a racial slur from Full Metal Jacket.

Here's how the dialogues have been going:

Max: Gook!

Daddy: "Gook"?

Max: (delighted) GOOK!

Daddy: What is gook, buddy?

Max: Heh heh.

Daddy: What is gook? Is it the duck?

Max: (Silence, looks coy)

Daddy: Is it "duck"? (Nothing.) Is it "quack"?

Max: Gook.

Daddy: Gook, huh.

Max: Heh heh heh.

Daddy: Gook!

Max: Heh heh hee hee hee.

Daddy: GOOK!

Max: HAHAHAHAHAHAHEEEEHEH!

We've pretty much ruled out "duck," "quack," and "book," all of which would make some sense phonetically. But then, he also proudly announces "gook!" when he's in the middle of the playground with nothing nearby.

Right now he's in the bath, making Mommy put something on her head. He's got an obsession with making her put things on her head.
