The Coast Guard: No Longer F***ing Around

filed under: Idle Chatter

Since we work in Lower Manhattan, we've gotten used to periodically seeing Coast Guard vessels of various kinds zipping around the harbor and the East River since 9/11. Monday I looked out from our cafeteria over the river and saw a little boat like the one pictured above speeding by, then whipping around in an absurdly tight circle and charging back upstream.

"Um..." I said to Lisa. "Is that a fire boat with hoses on the front, or have the Coast Guard patrols started packing twin .50 cal machine guns?"

Turns out it's the latter.

Sweeeeeeet.

NEW YORK, NY (Aug. 4, 2004)--An armed Coast Guard crew in a 25-foot patrol boat guards the southern tip of New York City as a Circle Line Ferry carries hundreds of tourists to the recently reopened Statue of Liberty Aug. 4, 2004. Coast Guard and other federal, state and local maritime law enforcement patrols have increased in the New York Harbor in light of the latest terror warnings that draws attention to Manhattan's financial district. As a result of the increase to the DHS threat level from yellow to orange, a 100-yard security zone has been established by the Coast Guard around Manhattan's financial district.
